PRELUDES AND PREMIERE
A Jacobs Masterworks Concert
Sameer Patel, conductor
Anne Akiko Meyers, violin
LISZT: Les Préludes
Adam SCHOENBERG: Violin Concerto (World Premiere)
SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 5
San Diego Symphony Associate Conductor Sameer Patel makes his Jacobs Masterworks debut. The concert opens with Franz Liszt’s most popular tone poem, in which he paints feelings rather than pictures in a series of delightfully contrasting episodes built from a few simple themes. Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers then offers the world premiere of a melodic and lovely violin concerto written just for her by acclaimed young American composer Adam Schoenberg. The program concludes with Jean Sibelius’ hopeful, life-affirming Symphony No. 5, composed as Europe was recovering from the First World War.
